Our portfolio covers a broad spectrum of clients and projects. The following should give you a taste of the variety of our work.

Archineers

Archineers is a consultancy at the cutting edge of sustainable architecture and building engineering, with a global client base and an award winning approach to sustainability.

As a highly successful business with a reputation for excellence, Archineers needed an overhaul of their visual branding and website to match that reputation.

Logo and tag line development are always a good place to start as they set the tone for the whole brand strategy. Archineers liked our bespoke rb7 font so much that they made a special request to use it in their logo. Of course, there was only ever one choice for the primary colour – green! We proposed a number of alternative tag lines, from which they chose "simple, sustainable solutions" as encapsulating their core values.

rb7design then worked through a total rebranding programme, providing templates for business cards, stationery and PowerPoint presentations to ensure consistent visual brand identity.

The new website was developed in two phases. Initially, the site was designed as a "static" site, meaning that any updates to content needed to be handled either by us or by an experienced web developer. The design was kept clean and simple, in keeping with Archineers' brand values, and the colours used were limited to the chosen signature green and grey. We also designed a Flash photo viewer to add to the slick feel of the site. Check out any of the projects at archineers.com/projects and then click on the thumbnail photo in the sidebar to see what we mean.

The original site was designed with an eye to the future, so phase two was to upgrade to a fully content-managed site. Using Drupal as the main Content Management System (CMS) platform, we added our own custom code, for example to handle the integration with the Flash photo viewer. Archineers can now update their own content, including adding projects to the portfolio page and writing articles for the news page.

BCY - Bury Christian Youth

BCY – Bury St Edmunds and District Christian Youth – is a charitable organisation working with young people in Suffolk.

BCY, like Archineers, also needed a total brand overhaul, complete with new logo, tag line and website. As a youth charity, however, their target audience is totally different.

In developing the logo, we set out three proposals that were selected to clarify the brand positioning in the minds of the BCY team and trustees. The first proposal was an attractive but "corporate" looking logo, the second a more edgy, youth-oriented logo and the third was a halfway house. In market testing, the adults almost universally preferred the corporate logo and the young people liked the youthful logo. No-one chose the halfway house. This helped the team to realise that what they wanted and what appealed to the true target audience weren't necessarily the same thing.

Clearly defining the core audience meant that the website design could be much more focussed. The final design incorporates our trademark simplicity and clean style whilst adding in a broader colour palette, modern font and striking graphics.

Again, we used Drupal as the underlying CMS platform with custom modules and "widgets". Adding new content is virtually as simple as using a word processor, with an interface familiar to anyone who's used Microsoft Word. Boxes on the front page pull together all the latest information from around the site and present it as a summary with links to the full page content as required. The team can add their own individual blog posts, schedule events in the calendar (which users of internet calendars can subscribe to) and keep the news stories ticking over.

As a full "Web 2.0" site, users are able to interact with the site, for example by voting on polls or adding their comments to articles (which site administrators can then moderate). The underlying platform has great flexibility for future expansion, such as adding forums, as and when BCY decide they need it.

Richard Barnes

Richard Barnes is the founder of rb7design, but he is also a singer/songwriter. Launching his own CD brought with it some major design projects.

As a solo artist releasing his first album, Richard had a totally blank design canvas to work from. He wanted a brand to differentiate himself from the crowded music marketplace – clean, simple and punchy. The end result was a design scheme centred around one colour – blue – and recurring use of circles. With such minimalist graphics, the CD stands out amongst a shelf of busy cover designs.

Although websites created entirely with Adobe Flash aren't suitable for every client, for Richard's needs it made perfect sense. The site needed to be targeted to a technically aware, design conscious market and so Flash was an entirely appropriate tool. Flash sometimes gets itself a bad name for poor ergonomics, so we were especially careful to ensure that the navigation through the site is intuitive and quick. A special "tool tip" area previews the selected menu item before the user clicks the button to make things even simpler, and you're never more than two clicks away from any area of the site.

Flash also comes to the fore in enabling the site to have what we dubbed a "tunebar" – a music player that remains in place as you navigate around the site and providing samples of each track from Richard's album. Unlike a traditional website, the music playback is uninterrupted by moving from one page to the next.

Finally, we designed promotional and point-of-sale materials to maximise the marketing impact of the CD.
